“In partnership with the Class Size Reduction Committee (CSR), the Los Alamitos Educational Foundation (LAEF) is once again facilitating the annual campaign to generate funding that will directly impact learning in the classroom. CSR, comprised of parents throughout the District, has worked tirelessly to limit the impact in the classroom of reduced state funding. LAEF continues to be a conduit for the campaign and congratulates them for their past successes.”

  ~Tom Stretz, LAEF Board President

Dear LAUSD Parents,

We are proud of the achievements of our students and teachers in Los Alamitos Unified School District (“LAUSD”). Our schools continue to excel as measured by standardized test scores and outstanding achievements by our students in the arts, athletics, and community service. Financial contributions in the form of salary concessions by teachers and staff and generous donations from parents have helped to support this achievement despite the drastic cuts and reduced funding that schools have faced for the past three years. More specifically, budget cuts to education are continuing and school districts in California have had to take drastic steps to reconcile their own shrinking budgets. LAUSD is no exception.
Over the past three years, the state has cut a staggering $18.5 million from LAUSD’s (our) operating budget, a 20% decrease in funding from normal levels. Average per pupil funding should be at $6,604 but languishes at $5,330. Based on the latest State budget, LAUSD could face a further cut of $351 per student which equates to $3.3 million dollars each year.
To maintain the high quality of education our students deserve, the LAUSD continues to take a proactive approach to fill growing budget gaps. In the past two years, teachers, classified staff, and management employees have taken unpaid furlough days, saving the district $2 million, and continue to explore further salary concessions through the collective bargaining process. Expenditures are being reduced across the board. Despite these measures, LAUSD needs increased parental support to maintain one of our most important educational principles: reduced class size.
